Memminger, German by birth, was moved to South Carolina. Well educated as a lawyer, he became a leader in education. He signed South Carolina's ordinance of secession & became a member of the Provisional Confederate Congress. He served as the Confederacy's first Sec. of the Treasury for three and a half years.
