Sykes, an Englishman, came to Texas in 1881 to become a cowboy, participated in trail driving, later became a ranch foreman in Kansas, and had many other jobs. In 1895 he built a boat & descended the Colorado from Needles & explored the Gulf of California. An excellent southwestern autobiography.
